20 Must Haves For A Busy Beginner Dessert Maker

Last updated on September 25, 2011 by Liza Hawkins

I have a lot on my plate these days. Good stuff. Interesting stuff. Stuff that I’m really enjoying.
All of this stuff, however, doesn’t leave much time in the day for regular cooking, let alone homemade desserts. Still, there are times when I need to bake something on short notice, and there’s no way I can run out to the store beforehand.
What I’ve learned is, just like a properly stocked pantry helps to make cooking homemade dinners less stressful, I can also keep things on hand to make baking something last minute a breeze.

Here are my Top 20 must haves for a busy beginner dessert maker:

  1. Baking powder
  2. Refrigerated pie crusts
  3. Frozen fruit – berries and peaches
  4. Sugars – granulated, powdered, light brown
  5. Butter
  6. Cake mix
  7. Cocoa powder
  8. All-purpose flour
  9. Graham crackers
  10. Eggs
  11. Lemons or lemon juice
  12. Whole milk or cream
  13. Real vanilla extract
  14. Chocolate chips
  15. Cupcake cups
  16. Silicone baking mats
  17. (2) 9″ cake pans
  18. 9″ pie plate
  19. 9″ x 11″ baking pan
  20. (2) 9″ x 11″ baking sheets
Obviously there are a slew of other things you can keep around to make dessert creation that much easier, but if you’re just starting out these should help greatly.
Happy baking!
