It All Started In 1984

So, as it turns out, I’ve always been a foodie at heart.

It All Started in 1984

My mother recently stumbled upon a an intriguing find from 1984….

My first written recipe. For FIG BARS. Yummy. I was a fan of Fig Newtons as a kid, so my guess is that’s where the inspiration stemmed from, although of all the sweet treats to pick for one’s first recipe, this one does scream, “GEEK!” a little more than say…chocolate chip cookies. Heh.

I had no memory of said recipe until I saw the second page, where my mind flashed back to our old kitchen in the house in which I grew up: faux-wood Formica counters, mustard yellow stove top and a brown fridge half the size of the norm nowadays. I can remember standing at that counter making these fig bars, but I have no idea where I got the recipe. Surely a 7 year old couldn’t come up with this on her own. I mean, I was a smart kid but not that smart!

Is there something you’re passionate about today that started when YOU were a kid?
Take a peek at mine and enjoy!

  1. This is really dear :-). I’m new to your blog and after reading this post simply had to browse through some of your other entries. I’m so glad I did. I really love the food and recipes you feature here. I’ll definitely be back. I hope you have a wonderful day. Blessings…Mary

  2. @Chad I know, right? What amazes me is how easily we forget some of that early stuff. I’m not very good at keeping stuff my kids make, but perhaps this is a queue from my mom to start doing better.

@Mary Thank you so much for stopping by! 🙂 I hope you return!

  3. that’s so awesome. My G-Mom said as a kiddo I would “cook” with her, but my cooking was a bowl of water and about 20 different spices to make my concoction 🙂 Good memories of cooking as a kid!
Stop by the HOP at my place if you would like! have a great Friday!

  4. This is AWESOME on SO MANY LEVELS–the actual recipe, the writing, the “cont.” on the next page. LOVE IT. However, I can’t wait to see the “that was then, this is now” revision of the recipe. 🙂

  5. @Ashley My kids make the same “soup” now. 🙂

@Jackie I totally need to remake it. My mom sent me a note after reading the post and said she remembers them being pretty good, actually! Ha!
