Just like the dead of winter, hot and steamy summer days make me want to read.

I’m guessing it has to do with wanting to be inside, curled up on the couch and away from extreme weather.

This past week, Marylanders were faced with temps over 90°F. Before noon. By lunch grew to something ungodly … like 110°F.

Well, with humidity, because here just the heat isn’t enough. You have to be able to swim through the air.

What I’m hoping for, is that when we escape to the Finger Lakes in August, things get a little cooler.

And a little more relaxed. Because the other thing that makes me want to read is vacation.

One summer I was determined to finish Stieg Larson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

I’d started it earlier that May, and only got about half-way through.

It was a slow read at first, but once I got to the middle it it picked right up. I couldn’t put it down while I was on vacation!

Whether it was the story-line or the vacation letdown, I don’t know, but it proved to be a great read.

This year I have a stack of books I’ve been meaning to read, and haven’t—or, I started for no other reason except life getting in the way, and poor planning on my part for carving out time.

I’m still mulling over which ones of the pile to bring.

Truth be told, I like everything from mindless vacation reads to more involved epic tales.

I digress.

So, here’s my list to pick from (some rereads)—which two or three would you choose?

Summer Reading List for Vacation

A Man Called Ove

Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations. Click here for more.

In the orderly, evidence-based manner with which Don approaches all things, he designs the Wife Project to find his perfect partner: a sixteen-page, scientifically valid survey to filter out the drinkers, the smokers, the late arrivers. Rosie Jarman possesses all these qualities. Don easily disqualifies her as a candidate for The Wife Project (even if she is “quite intelligent for a barmaid”). But Don is intrigued by Rosie’s own quest to identify her biological father. When an unlikely relationship develops as they collaborate on The Father Project, Don is forced to confront the spontaneous whirlwind that is Rosie—and the realization that, despite your best scientific efforts, you don’t find love, it finds you.
