Last fall I found myself back up in New York for a casting call for a new season of Food Network’s All-Star Academy, another show centered on home cooks.

All-Star Academy on Food Network

I didn’t make the cut, but I had a fantastic time going through the process and hanging with my sister in Brooklyn, scouring the city for cheap eats and things to get into.

Like last year’s casting call, I had to create a video for Food Network’s All-Star Academy prior to showing up.

The parameters were VERY specific:

  • BETWEEN 10 AND 15 MINUTES LONG.
  • FOLLOW THE PROMPTS AND BE SURE TO ANSWER ALL OUR QUESTIONS.
  • DO NOT SIMPLY ANSWER THE QUESTIONS Q&A STYLE.
  • COOK WHILE YOU TALK.
  • DO NOT SHOW A STEP-BY-STEP COOKING PROCESS.
  • BE YOURSELF!

I shot this one all by myself because the turnaround was swift—I had less than a week to pull it together, film and edit the video.

If it looks choppy, and my conversation with the camera seems a little awkward … and funny, that’s because it is!

Hahahaha.

It’s okay; I’m totally fine with laughing at myself.

Videos like this, for amateurs like me, are harder than you think. Trust me.

A 15 minute video takes at least half a day to film and then another couple hours to edit.

It’s a LOOOONNNNNG process. But I did it.

Want to see?

These sorts of things (um, like auditioning for Food Network’s All-Star Academy (!!!)) really pull me out of my comfort zone, but I believe that’s good once and a while.

It helps me grow, and to try new things.

Anyway, enjoy! Cheers!
