I typically keep a well-stocked pantry. I like the idea of being able to make a meal on a whim, and have most (if not all) of the ingredients on hand so that trips to the grocery store mid-week are few and far between.

That said, grocery shopping also happens to be one of my favorite “chores.” I realize this likely makes me an oddball and I’m okay with that.

This past week I was traveling for work along with a myriad of other things going on. Our pantry and fridge were both bare. Bare, as in, out of butter, milk, onions and a slew of other essential foods. Gasp!

So, given my crazy-nutso schedule, I granted the task of grocery shopping to my husband who had some time on his hands.

And, it’s not that he’s not willing to grocery shop (on the contrary, actually!), it’s just that I really enjoy it. I do, really.

I spent an hour on Tuesday night making a grocery list for my husband.

I don’t normally make a grocery list for myself; it’s all in my head.

In fact, I believe I’d rather stick hot forks in my eyes than prepare a grocery list for every shopping trip.

Also? Grocery lists prepared for someone else’s shopping trip are tough because it’s easy to forget the little things that would typically jump out at you while browsing the isles.

Maple syrup.

I FORGOT THE PURE MAPLE SYRUP.

And pancakes or waffles are typically a weekend staple in our house.

NO MAPLE SYRUP?!

{sigh}

Along with grocery shopping, I also love a great challenge. Like the challenge of coming up with some sort of delicious syrup to go with Saturday waffles.

‘Tis the season for clementines, and I happened to have a bagful sitting on my counter — something I *did* remember to put on the grocery list!

And that’s how we got to homemade orange syrup with clementines.

Homemade orange syrup couldn’t be any more simple.

(Haha — that’s kind of funny, because what I’m essentially making is a simple syrup. Foodie humor, nyuck-nyuck…)

I brought water and sugar to a boil in a heavy-bottom sauce pot, and then I added the juice from two clementines, along with their peels.

The whole mixture was kept at a rolling boil over medium-high heat for thirty minutes, until it had reduced by about half.

Then, I took it off the heat and let it cool in the refrigerator for a few minutes before pouring into eight-ounce canning jars to store back in the fridge, leaving out just enough warm syrup to use for homemade waffles that morning.

That’s the whole point of making it, right? Fresh warm syrup?

The kids loved it. The oldest wanted seconds.

This homemade orange syrup with clementines doesn’t have a heavy citrus flavor, rather it’s very mild and lightly orange scented. In a good way.

Although, adding a cup of orange juice in place of one of the cups of water would give an intense flavor boost if that’s what you’re going for!
