Summer Reading: Koontz & Larson (And Fresh Fish)

What is it about summer that makes reading seem so much more inviting? The dead of winter has the same effect (on me anyway) and so I’m guessing it has to do with wanting to be inside, curled up on the couch and away from extreme weather.
Because, yesterday, at 7:30am this is the loveliness Marylanders were faced with:
By lunch it was something unGodly…like 110. Really. With humidity, because here, just the heat isn’t enough. (The dust was on my camera lens, not the actual car. I swear.)
And most of you probably remember a little something called a blizzard that hit us in February 2010:
At the time, it was amazing – for about half a day. Then it was a mess for the next week.

But now, as we reach temps in the triple digits again, February 2010 doesn’t look so bad. Heck, it’s like childbirth – I’ve forgotten all the bad parts, so I wouldn’t mind going through it again. NOT.

What I’m hoping for, is that when we escape to Smith Mountain Lake later today, things get a little cooler. And a little more relaxed. Because the other thing that makes me wanna read is vacation.
I’m determined to finish Stieg Larson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, started in May, and only half-way through. I’ve found it to be a slow read so far…but seems to be picking up, so my interest is still there.

Plus, I have to finish the darn thing before the new version of the movie comes out. That’s this year, right?
And then, because my hopes are high, I picked out a second book to bring. And unfortunately it’s not my book club book since Wally World didn’t have it, and I wasn’t forward-thinking enough to order it for the trip.

I picked Dean Koontz’s The Door to December. (Yeah, I haven’t heard of it either – Koontz, yes. Book no.)

But he feels like a vacation read. Mindless. Kind of like Nora Roberts – except no romance, witches, sisters, or trilogies.
I digress.
So, that’s my plan for this week. Sitting, reading, staring at a lake. In between running around after the kids and waking up at 5am since the youngest always wakes up extra early on vacation, thank you very much.

Oh! And hopefully cooking fresh fish. Hubs’ plan is to catch one fish a day – probably cat fish, but there are other goodies in there too.
The last time I gutted and cleaned a fish was 20 years ago with my grandmother at the beach. It should come right back though, right? Like riding a bike?
We’ll see….
